Lord of the Flies
Chapter 1:
Prediction: The boys will crash on the island in a plane and they will have to make their home. They assign the leader and learn how to survive on the island.
Imagine: Lagoon. The lagoon that the boys wash up and play in on the island.
Imagine: The conch shell. Ralph said that the conch shell was like the talking stick in meetings.
|
Imagine: Jungle trees. Since on their island, there is a jungle with trees in it.
Use:
Wearing glasses. Piggy wears glasses in the book. I used to wear glasses and now looking back they were terrible. Now I wear contacts so I don't have to worry about glasses. Try:
-Where are all the other kids from the crash? -Why is everyone making fun of Piggy? -Why can't Jack kill the pig? -Why did they choose Ralph to be the leader? Clarify:
Scar= plane crash. They crashed and no adults survived. They were in the plane because WWII was going on and it was shot down. The conch shell brings all of the rest of the kids onto the beach. Ralph wins the leader role over Jack. The choir group are the hunters. |
Summary: It starts off with Ralph and Piggy walking around the plane crash and exploring a bit. They walk onto the beach and figure out they got shot down by an enemy plane and no adults survived. Ralph blows into a conch shell that him and Piggy found and that brings all the kids onto the beach. There they meet Jack and Simon that are part of the choir group. They have a meeting and appoint Ralph as the leader. Ralph takes Simon and Jack exploring and they find no sight of civilization. They head back and Jack goes hunting. He finds a pig but can't kill it and it gets away.
Chapter 2:
Prediction: Ralph will assign people jobs and they will come up with some rules and laws.
Imagine: Signal Fire. They start a signal fire so the smoke would go up in the air. So that they would get rescued if people see it.
Use:
People who don't listen. Piggy was whining about people not listening to Ralph and helping them. People don't listen to teachers or adults sometimes when they need too. Try:
-Why would Piggy bring up being stranded in front of little kids? -Why doesn't anyone listen to Piggy? -Why don't they go and look for the monster boy? |
Imagine: Jungle Fire. When they started the signal fire, it got some of the trees on fire which started a jungle fire.
Clarify:
-The choir group are the hunters. -Conch is the speaking shell. -The older boys have to comfort the little boys. -Piggy doesn't like most of the people in the group. He thinks they are stupid and immature. -Figure how to set the fire with Piggy's glasses. -They start a forest fire because they are disorganized. -The monster boy is missing. |
Summary: Ralph starts a meeting to recognize the roles, people should take. The conch is used at meetings as the speaking shell. Piggy makes them worried about being stranded and the older boys have to comfort the younger boys. They all decide to set up a signal fire on the top of the island. They use Piggy's glasses to start the fire and in the mess they set some trees on fire. They notice the little boy who spoke at the meeting about the monster is now missing. They don't go and look for him.
Chapter 3
Prediction: They will go and look for the missing kid and decide more roles to help them survive.
Imagine: Pale flowers. There were some pale flowers on the island.
Use:
Nightmares. The littlelens seem to have nightmares about the beastie a lot. I have nightmares sometimes. It's usually about being kidnapped or if I watched a scary movie, they are about that. Try:
-What is a creeper? -How long have they been on the island? -Why didn't they go after the little boy? -Is the beastie real? -Is Jack going crazy? |
Imagine: Sunset. Some of the boys were watching the sunset on the beach.
Clarify:
-Water to drink doesn't seem to be a problem. -Nobody is being responsible and doing their job. -Jack and Ralph don't get along that well. -They haven't even looked for the missing boy. -Jack is very paranoid about the beastie. -Simon found a little place in the forest that he goes to a lot and he hasn't told anybody about it. |
Summary: It started off with Jack hunting a pig. But he loses it and comes back to the beach to see Ralph and Simon building shelter. None of the boys are helping them with anything and that makes Ralph upset. The hunters haven't killed anything and all the boys are just off playing, having fun. The littleluns are having nightmares about the beastie but Jack doesn't care. Jack and Ralph fight about how the hunters are only focused on hunting and nothing else. Simon wanders off and finds a beautiful space in the jungle and sits down to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Chapter 4
Prediction: Ralph will call a meeting and bring up how nobody is helping. Jack and the hunters will continue to try to track down food to kill and eat.
Imagine: Coral Reef. Piggy was looking off into the water and spots a coral reef.
Use:
Taunting. Jack was making fun of Piggy and breaks one his glasses lenses when slapping him. My brother and I tend to bother and make fun of each other. We don't take it seriously and its just sibling stuff. Try:
-Why did Roger and Maurice kick down the littleluns castles? -Why is everyone so mean to Piggy? -Why would Jack not keep the signal fire going? |
Imagine: White sand on beach. The littleluns were playing on the beach building sandcastles.
Clarify:
-Jack and the hunters didn't keep the fire going. -Jack has become crazy with the idea of hunting and killing something. -Jack slapped Piggy making one of his glasses lenses break. -Now they can only use one lense to start the fire. -Roger and Maurice don't like the littleluns and like to bully them. |
Summary: Roger and Maurice crush the little kids sandcastles and throw rocks at them Jack has become obsessed with killing a pig and wont stop until he gets one. Jack was supposed to be watching the signal fire but he decided he wanted to hunt. A boat passes and the signal fire goes out. Jack comes onto the beach with a pig to celebrate but Ralph is mad at him for not looking after the fire. Piggy gets irritated and starts yelling at Jack and Jack starts to taunt him. Jack slaps Piggy in the face which breaks one of his glasses lenses. Jack and Ralph start to resent each other.
Chapter 5
Prediction: Ralph tries to calm down the littleluns because they have been having nightmares about it.
Use:
Fear. All the boys get fearful and scared about the monster that a littlelun saw. I get very scared after I watch a scary movie and in the dark. Try:
-Did the littlelun actually see a beast? -Why won't the boys listen to Ralph? -Where did Jack the hunters go? Clarify:
-Ralph needs a haircut. -Ralph, Piggy and Jack try to calm the group down by saying there is no monster. -The hunters probably went to go hunt down the beast. |
Imagine: The Beastie. The littleuns have been having nightmares about this monster that lives in the forest.
|
Summary: Ralph calls a meeting and talks to the boys about how they aren't doing anything for the group and talks about the monster. He tries to calm people (mostly the littleluns) down by saying there is no such thing. The littleluns have been having nightmares about them but Ralph and Piggy try to calm them down. One of the littleluns spes up about how he actually saw a beast and the whole group gets fearful. Jack runs off with his hunters and only Ralph, Piggy and Simon remain on the beach.
Chapter 6
Prediction: They go out and hunt the beast. Simon will go to his peaceful area and get some alone time because it is much needed.
Imagine: Parachutist. A military parachutist got killed floating down and he landed on the island.
Use:
War. The boys come from England because they are n the middle of war. The plane was bringing them to a safe place when it was shot down. That reminded me of Narnia, when the children had to ride the train to get away from the bombing. Their parents put them off on a train so they could be safe. |
Imagine: Wooden Spears. The boys carry these while looking for the monster they thought they saw.
Try:
-How did the parachutist die? -Why did the twins lie about the monster assaulting them? - Clarify:
-The boys finally listened to Ralph with his orders to hunt the beast. -The twins thought the beast was the parachutists body. -Ralph finds confidence and explores a cave alone when the other boys are to scared. |
Summary: Military planes above are fighting which the boys don't seem to notice. A parachutist flies down dead and gets stuck in a tree. Sam and Eric wake up and sees the body in the fire light and they think its the monster. They run down to the beach to tell everyone what they saw in a meeting. All the boys except for Piggy and the littleluns go out to look for the beast. When looking, Jack and Ralph get friendly again until they have to go rebuild the signal fire.
Chapter 7
Prediction: Jack and the hunters will hunt for food again because they always do. The boys will think about civilization and be depressed about how they aren't rescued yet.
Imagine: Choppy Ocean. Ralph is sad, thinking about how all the boys have become. They don't listen to him. He thinks this looking out over the ocean.
Use:
Excitement. Ralph got very excited at the idea of hunting and killing. He got caught up with the kill. I get very excited over little things like when my favorite TV show comes on or when I read. Try:
-Why don't they stop stabbing Robert? -Is Ralph becoming savage from hunting just like Jack did? -Did they see the parachutist in the dark or was it a beast? |
Imagine: Large Boar. The hunters and Ralph were hunting down a large boar.
Clarify:
-The ocean is like a wall blocking their escape from the island. -Ralph gets excited when hunting, he is starting to turn savage for the kill. -They almost kill Robert when reenacting the hunt. -I'm pretty sure Ralph stabbed Jack but doesn't notice. |
Summary: Jack and the hunters find pig droppings so they decide to go hunt it. Ralph joins them and feels the excitement you get while hunting. The boar escapes but they go back to the rest of the boys to reenact the chase. Robert is the boar and the boys pretend to spear him until they actually start to hurt him. They eventually stop and Robert crawls away bloodied and beaten. When night fell they hunt again for the beast and they actually see it.
Chapter 8
Prediction: Jack and Ralph will fight again and get on each other nerves. The hunters will of course hunt again and Simon will go to his peaceful place.
Imagine: The sow head. Jack's group put it on a stake and put it in the jungle as an offering for the beast.
Clarify:
-Jack thinks Ralph should be voted off from being the leader but the boys don't listen and stick with Ralph. -Now Jack and his hunters are separated from Ralph and the rest of the boys. -The hunters kill a sow and puts it's head on a stake in a jungle glade. -Simon finds it when he goes to his peaceful area and it's covered with flies know as Lord of the Flies. Use:
Depressed. Ralph is depressed when Jack and his hunters left. I think he's sad because Jack called him a coward and a bad leader. I was sad once we had to put down the dog I grew up with. I cried for a straight hour. |
Imagine: Simon's jungle glade. This place is where Simon came to rest and to get away from all the boys. He see's the pig head there and he imagine's it talking to him.
Try:
-Why doesn't Ralph stand up for himself against Jack and his hunters? -Where did Simon go when Jack invited them to the feast? -How does lord of the flies go along with the sow head? |
Summary: Everyone is fearful of the monster and Jack blows the conch for a meeting. He announces that Ralph is a coward and a bad leader. The boys refuse to vote Jack the new leader and Jack storms away. Piggy cheers Ralph up by having the idea of making a signal fire on the beach. Jack and the hunters start a new group and go out to hunt a sow. They chop the sow's head off and sticks it on a spear and puts it in the jungle. Jack invited Ralph's group to a feast and they accept but Simon sneaks off. He goes to his peaceful area and when he arrives he see's the sow head surrounded by flies and he faints.
Chapter 9
Prediction: Simon will go tell the boys about the body and the boys won't believe him. The boys would want to go look at the body but when they go the body would be gone.
Imagine: The feast. All of the boys except for Simon, are feasting on the pig and chanting.
Use:
Feast. Jack's tribe had a feast and invited Ralph and Piggy to join. They feasted on a sow that they killed. When I go down to Indiana and visit the Amish town, Shipshewana, I eat at the Essen House. There they have what I would call a feast because it's a family style dinner with noodles, a vegetable, two meats, mashed potatoes and gravy. Then you get a dessert of your choice, usually a slice of pie. It's amazing and so good. |
Imagine: Rocks on the beach. The boys at the feast gathered around and killed Simon because they thought he was the beast.
Clarify:
-Simon woke up and now are going to tell the boys about the so called beast. -Piggy and Ralph go to the feast to see if they still have leadership. -All the boys kill Simon because they think he is the beast. Try:
-Why didn't the boys stop when they saw they were killing Simon? -Why would Ralph and Piggy go to Jack's feast in the first place? -How could the boys kill one of their own? |
Summary: Simon wakes up and sees the body of the parachutist. He realizes that the boys have mistaken that for the beast so he goes down to tell the boys. Ralph and Piggy are having a good time eating but most of Ralph's members go to Jack's team. The boys do a wild hunting dance and reenact the hunting scene when they see a shadow in the jungle. All the boys go to attack it when they figure out its Simon. They think that he is the beast so they killed him. He tries to explain but they wont let him. His body goes out into the ocean.
Chapter 10
Prediction: Nobody will miss Simon and they won't feel bad because they are all savages. Ralph's group tries to become civilized again and Jack's group becomes more savage.
Imagine: Castle Rock. That is where Jack's group resides for the rest of the book.
Try:
-Why would Ralph and Piggy join in on killing Simon? -Is Jack really that savage to just beat up somebody for no reason? -How are they going to start the fire without Piggy's glasses? Clarify:
-Wilfred didn't do anything bad for Jack to beat him up. -Castle Rock is Jack's tribes new home. -Jack and the hunters took Piggy's glasses when attacking them. |
Imagine: Piggy's glasses. Jack and two other hunters go into Ralph's hut and steals piggy's glasses. Now Ralph's group has no way to make the fire.
Use:
Guilty. Ralph and Piggy feel guilty that they were apart of the feast and the killing of Simon. I feel guilty when I don't do something that a person asks me to do. Like if my mother asks me to feed the dogs and I forget, I feel very bad for the dogs. |
Summary: Ralph and Piggy feel guilty about what happened the night before. Piggy doesn't believe that they were apart of that. Meanwhile Jack beats up Wilfred for no apparent reason and decides to go steal Piggy's glasses. They set out at night and attack Ralph and Piggy in their huts. They run away with Piggy's glasses so now Ralph's group has no way of lighting the signal fire.
Chapter 11
Prediction: Ralph and his group goes to get Piggy's glasses back. It turns into a big fight and many people die.
Imagine: Shattered conch shell. When Jack and Ralph were fighting, the conch shell was crushed and shattered.
Try:
-Why did Roger kill Piggy? -Why couldn't they try like rubbing two sticks together to light the fire? -Why were the guards throwing the stones aiming to miss? -Why does Jack want to kill Ralph? Clarify:
-The air was too cold to start a fire with sticks and anything else. -The conch shell broke because Piggy dropped it and it was crushed by the boulder. -Now there is no leader because the conch shell is gone. |
Imagine: The boulder that kills Piggy. During the fighting, Roger pushed a boulder down the mountain and Piggy couldn't get away in time.
Use:
Escaping. After Piggy got killed in the fight, Ralph had to escape from Jack. Ralph ran away into the jungle and found a place to hide. That reminds me of the game hide and seek, you have to run away and find a spot to hide. You are also scared when hiding because you never know when they are going to find you, just like Ralph went through. |
Summary: Ralph calls a meeting and decides that they need to go to Castle Rock to get Piggy's glasses back. Ralph and his group arrives and is met with stones being thrown at them. Jack comes out and starts a fight. Sam and Eric get tied up. Roger pushes the boulder down and it hits Piggy who is holding conch and it shatters. The boulder kills Piggy and Ralph runs away. Jack and the hunters are tracking Ralph down.
Chapter 12
Prediction: Ralph gets away from Jack and his group but later on the find him and kill him. Or they could get rescued by a boat hat saw the smoke from the fire.
Imagine: Jungle fire. Jack and his group started a forest fire to try and get Ralph out of his hiding spot.
Try:
-Why is Jack chasing down Ralph? -Why won't Sam and Eric join Ralph and leave Jack's group? -Why is the officer embarrassed when they started to cry? Clarify:
-Jack beat Sam and Eric into joining his group. -Ralph took the stake of the sow head and used it as a spear for defense. -The jungle fire smoke brought the navy officer over to the island. -The navy officer can't believe they are this savage. |
Imagine: The navy officer. The officer came on to the island because he saw the jungle fire. He saved the remaining boys.
Use:
Crying. When the boys got rescued, they started to cry. I mean I would cry too, after all this time stuck with these savage people on the island. I have cried many times in my lifetime. When I watch really happy things, I get happy tears. And the boys were crying with happy tears. |
Summary: Ralph hides in thickets and thinks about what has happened on this island. Ralph sneaks to Jack's and finds Sam and Eric guarding. They give him some food and tell him that Jack is going to come after him. Ralph again hides in a thicket and falls asleep. The next morning Ralph smells smoke and realizes that Jack set the jungle on fire to try to get him out. Ralph runs out onto the beach and looks up to see a Navy officer. They were finally rescued.

Ralph:
-Leader of whole group, schoolboy, civil, kind to the littleluns, get along with everyone but Jack. - He is the main person that symbolizes civilization. But when he hunts and in the feast it brings out the evil within him. |
Jack:
-Leader of the hunters, choir boy, obsessed with hunting and killing, savage, wants all the power, cruel and wild, - He symbolizes the savage and evil in the book. He is always bloodthirsty for the kill and is brutal. Represents the evil within people. |
Simon:
-Kind, schoolboy, kind to the littleluns and everyone else, worker, likes nature and quiet, natural goodness. -He is the moral one out of the group and he is against evil. He symbolizes civilization but morally. He has morals and values. |
Piggy:
Ralph's second in command, always stuck taking care of the littleluns, his glasses are very important for the fire, inventor. - He also symbolizes civilization but the scientific side. They use his glasses to start the fire and he invents a sundial. |
The super ego stops you from doing something your Id wants you to do. The Id is impulses that drives you to do something. The ego mediates between the super ego and Id.
-Jack's Id shows more than the superego. -Ralph, Simon and Piggy's superego shows more than the Id. -But when Ralph goes hunting and at the feast his Id shows through. |
Themes and Motifs:
Themes:
Civilization vs. Savagery - When they first started on the island, they were all very civil. They decided a leader and the jobs everyone should do to try to get rescued. As the book progressed, Jack and the hunters were turning more savage. It started when Jack was chosen to hunt and from there he became obsessed with killing. All of the morals and values everybody had flew out the window when they reenacted the boar scene. But Ralph, Piggy and Simon seemed to be the only civil people left. Until Ralph and Piggy attended the feast and helped with the death of Simon. Simon was the only person out of the whole book to be kind and civil to everyone. Loss of Innocence - The boys had to grow up fast. They had to be adults if they wanted to get off this island. The evil within all of them came out and they lost their childish minds. They have to grow up to kill. Jack wasted no time in doing that, the evil was brought out of him. |
Motifs:
Biblical - Simon's peaceful spot is know as the Garden of Eden as it has no evil in it until the sow head is planted. The sow head could also be taken as the snake that brings evil into the garden. Simon could also be Jesus because he was going to deliver the truth to the boys but they kill him. Just like Jesus because he was going around and telling the truth that got him killed. But whiles Jesus's death brought salvation, Simon's death brought more savagery. |
Symbols:
Signal Fire: The signal fire helped them connect with civilization. The signal fire is their way to get rescued. It reminded them of civilization. When the fire was out, that was when people turned savage either hunting of killing.
|
The Conch - Its a symbol of power and civilization. Ralph picks it up and all the boys vote him leader. Also each time the meeting is called, the conch loses its power because the boys don't listen. At the end when the conch is crushed, all the civilization is gone.
|
Tone and Mood:
Tone:
Dark - It's dark because the boys are killing people and making fun of people with no regrets. Well at least Jack has no regrets by killing Simon and Piggy. Also how Jack is crazy about hunting and doesn't listen to what Ralph says. Depressing - It's sad how Simon died. He was the civil and kind one of the group. Most of the boys are turning savage and don't care what they do to other people. |
Mood:
Sad - It is very sad to me how this book played out. The death of Simon killed me because I actually liked him and he was actually civil. How Piggy gets treated by everyone is very sad because he gets no recognition of starting the fire since they need his glasses. Anger - Throughout this book, Jack made me very mad. They way he treated everyone and the way he turned savage. I hate how he treated Piggy and the littleluns. At the end he jut started to beat people up for no reason. |
